Mattress Shopping & Care

When was the last time you considered the state of your mattress? It's easy to overlook the fact that mattresses are perhaps the most frequently used piece of bedding we own. To put it in perspective, if you sleep eight hours a night, you'll spend about 3000 hours per year on your mattress. Over a decade, that adds up to 30,000 hours on the same bed. Here are some signs that it might be time to start thinking about replacing your mattress:

Age: If you've had your current mattress for over eight years, it might be time for a change. Quality mattresses typically last between eight to ten years. Beyond that, they tend to lose their comfort and support.

Morning Discomfort: If you wake up feeling more tired or in pain than when you went to sleep, your mattress could be the culprit. Don't wait too long to make a change if you're not waking up refreshed.

Comfort Comparison: If you find your couch more comfortable than your bed, it's a clear sign. Your mattress should offer a smooth, comfortable surface for restful sleep.

Visual Wear: Check your mattress for visible signs of wear, like sags and indentations. An uneven or frayed appearance is a strong indicator that it's time to start shopping for a new one.

Compression: The upholstery layers in all mattresses naturally compress over time. To prolong its lifespan and maintain its comfort, remember to rotate your mattress occasionally.

Hand-Me-Down: If your mattress was passed down from a family member or friend, it's likely due for replacement.

Neglect: Mattresses often go unnoticed in our homes, despite being the most frequently used piece of furniture. Pay close attention to its condition. Do you hear creaking or notice sagging or uneven areas? Taking a closer look might reveal the need for a replacement.

Normally, your mattress should be carried flat on its side by two people. This is the safest and most manageable method, minimizing the risk of damage. Avoid bending your mattress under any circumstances. Bending can harm the innerspring unit. When navigating doorways, flex the mattress rather than bending it, and be careful not to stress the corners when applying fitted sheets.

Regularly rotating your mattress helps maintain its comfort and extend its lifespan. Mattresses comprise multiple layers of padding to enhance comfort and support. Initial body impressions can be a normal occurrence as the upholstery conforms to individual body contours. To minimize these impressions, occasionally rotate the mattress throughout its life.

Preserve your mattress's cleanliness by using a mattress protector. Avoid exposing your mattress to moisture or
Liquids, and refrain from using dry cleaning fluids on it, as it could damage the comfort and upholstery materials.

Higher-quality mattresses, particularly those with abundant natural fillings, may develop body indentations as they adapt to your body's contours. Regular turning helps the fillings settle more uniformly. For the first few months, turn the mattress from end to end and side to side every week, then about every three months thereafter. Remember that non-turn mattresses should be rotated, but handles are not meant to support the mattress's full weight.

One-sided mattresses are for single-sided use. Rotating is still recommended to distribute wear and tear evenly. Two-sided mattresses can be used on either side, but do not require frequent rotation, although occasional turning is advised.

The recommended cleaning method is vacuuming. In case of a stain, gently apply mild soap with cold water. Avoid saturating the mattress or using dry cleaning fluids, as these substances could harm the comfort and upholstery materials.
